Dennis Gaines: Cowboy Poet

Former working ranch cowboy, winner of the Academy of Western Artists 2000 Cowboy Storyteller and Humorist of the Year and 2004 Cowboy Poetry Album of the Year. Widely traveled, presents stories, poems, and songs of the cowboy life, both traditional and contemporary.

BS from Texas Tech University in Park Administration, with emphasis in Interpretation. Graduate work at UT-Tyler in school of International Studies with emphasis in Field Biology. Over 25 years experience in State Parks and Wildlife Management areas, National Parks, and self-employed.
PROGRAMS BY THE TRAVELING NATURALIST
NATURE HIKE
Groups of around 30 hikers will follow a merry path along gentle terrain. Following completion of 30-45 minutes walk, participants will be able to identify trees and shrubs of the Texas Hill Country as well as some insects and flowers (in season). Birds and habitats along with reptiles and cultural history of the area will be shared also. Ability to walk, good shoes, binoculars, all ages. Large groups will be split into smaller groups of up to 40 participants.
SLITHERS AND SUCH
Hands on, User-friendly non-venomous reptiles used to discuss food chain and natural relationships of animals that share our space. Amphitheater program, all ages 30-45 minutes. Unlimited numbers of participants.
HISTORY, MYSTERY AND MAGIC OF THE TEXAS HILL COUNTRY
An Amphitheater program for sharing the history of Lake Buchanan Adventures, the building of the dam and the pre-history of the area including Native American occupation and settlement by Europeans. 30-45 minutes, unlimited numbers of participants.
SCALES, TALES AND SHELLS
A "juicy" aquatic program along the shores of Lake Buchanan Adventures. Biologists will share finds along the shore as well as delve into the animals and creatures that live below the surface of the lake and fly above also. 30-45 minutes, all ages. Ability to stand and walk in sand. Large groups will be split into smaller groups of up to 40 participants.
OWL PROWL (SEASONAL)
An Amphitheater program where Songbirds of Screech Owls will be called into the arena of occupation for identification using mechanical call. Participants will observe flight patterns, types of bird, and reasons for animal response to specific sounds. (Owl pellet dissection may be available for small groups). 30-unlimited participants, all ages.
SUMMER FLUTTERS AND SOME ARE NOT (SEASONAL)
Discover the metamorphosis of native butterflies with this interactive program. Host plants with caterpillars, nectar plants and sometimes live adults are used to enlarge knowledge of live cycle of locally common butterflies. Nature hike may be included.
