In 1993, the Lower Colorado River Authority (LCRA) purchased 940 acres and six years later opened the site as Canyon of the Eagles Lodge and Nature Park. It's one of three LCRA nature learning centers on the Colorado River, between the Hill Country and the Texas Coast.
Built with $6 million of public and private money, the park is a joint venture of the LCRA (with assistance from the Texas Parks & Wildlife Department) and San-Antonio based Presidian, L.C., which operates the facility under LCRA guidelines.
Canyon of the Eagles' 64 guest rooms are housed in 16 buildings, wedged among the trees and designed by Lake/Flato Architects to encourage connection with land and nature. Habitat saving landscaping has garnered Canyon of the Eagles certification from Texas Parks & Wildlife as a Texas wildscape.
